For Those Seeking Help
We serve individuals and families facing transportation crisis, including survivors of domestic violence, human trafficking survivors, single parents, veterans in need, vehicle-housed families, and the working poor. Eligibility is based on financial need, the viability of the vehicle, and the urgency of the situation.
We cover a wide range of repairs including brakes, electrical systems (starters, alternators), cooling systems, suspension, steering, engine repairs, transmission service, exhaust systems, HVAC, and diagnostics. Major rebuilds or restorations are generally outside our scope.
Emergency situations can be addressed within 48-72 hours. Standard applications typically take 1-2 weeks for review, approval, and scheduling of repairs. We prioritize based on urgency and available resources.
SMF covers the cost of approved repairs. In some cases, we ask applicants to contribute what they can — even a small amount helps stretch our resources further. No one is turned away due to inability to contribute.
You'll need proof of vehicle ownership or registration, proof of income or financial need, a referral from a partner agency (helpful but not required), and information about the vehicle's condition. Our AI assistant can help you gather what you need.
Absolutely! Many of our applicants come through referral partners like social service agencies, veteran services, domestic violence shelters, and other nonprofits. Your caseworker can submit an application on your behalf.
For Donors
Yes! The Stranded Motorist Fund is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Your donation is tax-deductible to the full extent allowed by law. You will receive a receipt for your records.
100% of donations go directly to our mission. Funds are used for vehicle repairs, parts, donated vehicle preparation, and program operations. We maintain low overhead to maximize impact.
Yes! During the donation process, you can dedicate your gift to honor or remember someone special. We'll send a notification to the honoree or their family if you provide their information.
On our donation page, simply select the "Monthly" option. Monthly donors become part of our Road Warriors giving circle and receive quarterly impact reports showing exactly how their ongoing support is changing lives.
Yes! We accept vehicle donations. Donated vehicles in good condition are given to families in need. Vehicles needing work may be used as training projects with our school partners. Contact us for details.
For Partners
SMF Certified Shops agree to provide repairs at reduced rates for our applicants. In return, shops receive referrals, community recognition, and the satisfaction of serving their neighbors. Certification involves a brief application and verification process.
Car dealers can donate trade-ins that would otherwise go to auction. We handle all title transfer paperwork. Dealers receive a tax deduction and the knowledge that their donation is going directly to a family in need.
Businesses can partner with SMF through corporate donations, matching gift programs, employee giving campaigns, or sponsoring specific vehicles or repairs. We offer recognition opportunities for all partnership levels.
Automotive education programs receive vehicles needing repairs that match their curriculum. Students gain real-world experience while helping families. All work is quality-verified by SMF before vehicles are returned.
Partner agency caseworkers have access to a dedicated portal to submit applications on behalf of clients. This streamlines the process and allows caseworkers to track the status of their referrals.
